What is the National Cycle Network?

The National Cycle Network (NCN) aims to link towns, cities and destinations across Ireland with a safe, connected and inviting cycle network; encouraging more people away from their cars and onto their cycles.

As you can imagine, it takes a lot of discussion with partner groups, communities and other bodies to develop a strong, insightful foundation for such a comprehensive plan. Transport Infrastructure Ireland (TII) has been working closely with stakeholders over recent months to gather information on existing cycle infrastructure, define plan objectives and develop the proposed network. (More information on the NCN objectives and the steps involved in developing the plan are available on our FAQs page.) It’s envisaged the overall plan for the NCN will be delivered by local authorities across the country over the coming years.

The consultation period for the NCN Plan ran until the 7th of June 2022. We would like to thank those who took the time to engage with the proposal over this time. Following our analysis of public feedback, a report will be completed in August 2022 on the proposed NCN incorporating the feedback received. Detailed plans for the roll out of the NCN over the coming years will then be developed.

Further information on how we have developed the current draft plan is available on the page outlining our Vision

The NCN consultation is now closed. We appreciate all submissions received and your feedback will guide the final NCN Plan expected later this year.

Integration with other networks

The NCN has been designed to integrate with and complement other cycle infrastructure and networks – both existing and planned – to provide a comprehensive series of networks across Ireland. You can see how these networks interact on our Proposal page, but below is an overview highlighting how the NCN will act as the core network connecting cities and towns with each other, key destinations and other cycle networks.
